Current Events: PHILIPPINES VS. TAIWAN
Over the last couple of weeks, there has been conflict through the Philippines and Taiwan and it is starting to drag the Us into the middle of it. earlier in the month, a Taiwanese fisherman was killed after getting into an argument with a Philippine coast guard. After the Philippines attempted to apologize, Taiwan rejected them and threatened to hold military drills. This affects the US because of the defense treaties we have with both of these countries. Patrick Ventrell, US state department spokesman , only last Wednesday stated “we are concerned by the increase in tensions between two neighboring democracies and close partners of the United States … we urge the Philippines and Taiwan to take all appropriate measures to clarify disagreements and prevent recurrence of such tragic events.” At this moment, the US state department prefer not to share their thoughts on who created this stimuli.

connecting this to what we've already learned, i first of all see that we have many organizations and agreements with different areas in Asia.... also realizing that many of our objects have printed on them "made in China", "made in Japan", "made in Taiwan", etc. this shows how much of an importance they are to us, as a country and we have gained many opportunities with their help. also it shows the intolerance for other areas in Asia besides themselves. also in the article, it says that usually these kind of conflicts happen more between china and japan, which is also true. Overall, there are many conflicts going on in different parts of Asia and its not only in one main area, but instead in different places.

CROSSING THE POP-CULTURE UNIVERSE:
japan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0X0cmQAdSE
america:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbDqunQcy54
Both of these videos show commercials advertising gum. the Japanese commercial shows them singing and dancing.... advertising in the way of bringing attention to the actors and the product. The american commercial sells the product by saying it "cleans a dirty mouth" , while the actors are saying things like "son of a biscuit and "shut the front door", applying that that is foul language. These are 2 different ways things can be advertized... and are both quite awkward as well.

TATTOOS:
obviously from this photo, many japenese people have a lot of tattoos covering their whole body. tattoos have been a long part of japan's culture, evolving over the generations. some people look at it as just a fashion statement, but others look at it as something personal and spiritual. a similar style seems to come through. not totally realistic, but almost a surreal type of artwork is done.
this artwork reminds me of the tattoos of Oliver Sykes from bring me the horizon. the simple details in the artwork show a big picture with significant meaning. these aren't his only tattoos though, he has many more to show off including a rose on his neck, three dots next to his eye, and a heart on his chest. if you would like to learn more about his tattoos:
